Construction Services

CDM coordination support and delivery

The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations (commonly referred to as the CDM Regs) provide a Health and Safety framework for the whole construction process, from concept to completion.

CDM influences and governs how a construction project is to be designed, constructed, maintained, and ultimately demolished.

Legal duties are placed upon everyone involved in a construction project including the Client, Principal Designer, Designers, Principal Contractor and Contractors. CDM applies to all building, civil engineering, and engineering construction work. This includes new-build, alteration, maintenance, renovation, demolition, site clearance and site investigation.

Work involving more than one contractor require the appointment of a Principal Designer and Principal Contractor.

A commercial client is deemed to be the Principal Designer and/or the Principal Contractor for any period during the Pre-construction/Construction Phase where these appointments have not been fulfilled.

Practical Solutions Midlands Limited have developed an expertise in the fields of CDM and Health & Safety, with our consultants working on projects from new builds to major refurbishments covering commercial, residential and industry projects throughout the UK.

We have a wealth of consultants experienced in many different disciplines including, Structural, Civil and Infrastructure fulfilling the following roles:

  • Chartered Safety and Health Consultants
  • CDM Principal Designers
  • CDM Client advisor
  • CDM PD Advisor

Contractor Health and Safety Management

  • Management Systems

    • We aid in the development of robust and pragmatic systems for the control of contractors, which integrate into the client’s own quality and control processes.
  • Contractor Competence

    • Practical Solutions Midlands Limited help in undertaking contractor competent assessments and setting up approved supplier databases.
  • On-site control and on-site verification audits and inspections of contractor performance to ensure compliance and encourage continuous improvement.

Construction Safety Audits / Inspections

  • External site health and safety inspections and audits by independent competent health and safety professionals are now considered an essential part of construction site health and safety arrangements.
  • The inspections and audits provide reassurance and peace of mind to the Clients that the construction work on their projects is being carried out in accordance with legal and best practice requirements and an opportunity for Principal Contractors and Contractors to demonstrate that the safe systems of work and good health and safety standards are being followed on their sites.
  • Importantly, site inspections form part of the proactive site monitoring arrangements to regularly identify any shortcomings and areas of improvements before they result in any incident or accident on site.
  • In comparison to regular site health and safety inspections, a health and safety audit is considered more as a one-off exercise to monitor any site health and safety related issue.
  • At Practical Solutions Midlands Limited we provide independent site health and safety inspections and audit service.
  • Our inspections and audit service include undertaking a thorough site visit (generally unannounced) to identify any shortcomings in the current health and safety arrangements (and recognise good practices as well) and present a formal written report with identified issues where improvements may be required (with photos where necessary), suggested action plan and target completion time scales where applicable.
  • Our inspections and audit service are focused on supporting the site managers and supervisors in understanding the legislative and best practice requirements and assist them in rectifying any short comings in a practical and sensible manner.
